Lead based paint is a leading source of lead poisoning.

Between 1940 and 1978, lead-based paint was used in interior and exterior residential surfaces, toys, and furniture. It was banned in 1978 by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

If your home was built prior to 1978, there is a good chance your home has lead-based paint. This affects approximately 38 million homes or 40% of the nation’s housing.  Often lead paint is under layers of newer paint. If the paint is good shape, the lead paint is usually not a problem but if it is peeling, chipped, chalking, cracked, damaged, or damp, it is a hazard and needs immediate attention.

Homes and buildings containing deteriorating lead-based paint are a health threat, especially to children under five. It is a huge concern if the lead based paint is found on surfaces children can chew or has lots of wear-and-tear, such as windows and window sills; doors and door frames, and stairs, railings, banisters, and porches. When lead-based paint on surfaces is sanded or scraped, it breaks into tiny, sometimes invisible pieces children can swallow or inhale. Individuals can ingest dust and soil contaminated with lead from paint that flakes or chalks as it ages.

Additionally, lead dust can settle on floors, walls, and furniture. Renovation, repair or painting activities can create toxic lead dust when painted surfaces are disturbed or demolished. In 2006 sanctioned new rules applying to all renovations, including paint removal, demolition, window replacement, and heating duct work repairs. Your contractor must be certified to perform renovations that include lead-based paint because of its health threat.
